The picturesque village of Delph has barely changed from its 19th century hey-day, when it's small mills were at the heart of a thriving community, and today remains an ideal start for walks up the Castleshaw Valley to the Roman Fort, one of a series built on the Roman military road from Chester to York. Nearby, the largest of the Saddleworth villages, Uppermill is situated in the valley below Saddleworth Church and is dominated by an impressive viaduct.
