Positive: Glynn called the day before to give us some directions for once we were in the village and let us know that we could check out a little later. Easily accessed the property using keybox. Plenty of room for 4 of us - we just used the 2 twin bedrooms upstairs. Plenty of towels provided. Cleaning items provided in kitchen. Code for WiFi on router. Decent parking space at the back of the property as the neighbours don't appreciate more than one car at the front of the property. Enjoyed the garden space, sat outside for a morning coffee from The Forge and picked plums and apples (very tasty, thank you!) and spotted a rabbit hopping up the garden. It was brilliant waking up to sheep at the front door. The village is absolutely lovely. Lovely beck with a very handy crossing point and plenty of space for families, couples, hikers and dog walkers to enjoy. We sampled the village deli's lovely baked goods, delicious cooked breakfasts at both tearooms (The Forge and The Barn) and the excellent evening meals at the Crown pub alongside a game of Scrabble. The cottage has a very comfy living room for socialising with some interesting books - we particularly liked the history of the village and the UK's most beautiful villages. The village is also in a great location for visiting other local places: we arrived from a day in York; easy journey to Dalby Forest for Saturday Parkrun, lunch and walk; a lovely circular walk via Ravenswick Hall to the Royal Oak at Gillamoor; pizza and live music at The Blacksmiths Arms in Lastingham.
Negative: Despite the directions, we struggled to find the property in the dark, a little confused about how far up the green it was - half of our party asked the friendly locals in the pub for help whilst a lovely neighbour found the other half of our party on the lane! We did not find a handbook/folder of information about staying in the property, so were not sure about how to deal with rubbish and had no instructions for turning on the heating. Luckily, the bedding kept us warm and it was a gorgeous weekend so lots of time outside where it was warmer! Very low doorways to the two upstairs bedrooms and bottom of stairs. There are some signs on the outside of the bedrooms, but there were bumped heads - and most of our group are under 5 ft 4! No AA batteries in downstairs DVD player, nor the torches when we looked for spares. Whilst the general space, kitchen and regularly used bits of furniture were clean, there were a lot of cobwebs (understandable in a cottage!) and general dust but much heavier behind furniture (very noticeable when trying to sort a DVD player!). It could be that we stayed towards the end of the season and it is due a full clean soon.
Summary: A great, comfy stay in a lovely cottage in a beautiful village.
