On the border of Blackmore Vale and at the top of the quaintly titled Piddle Valley, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is the West Dorset village of Buckland Newton and its seven neighbouring hamlets, among them Brockhampton. The settlement is located 12 miles north of Thomas Hardy's Dorchester and 12 miles south of mediaeval Sherborne. A visit to the neighbouring historic Cerne Abbas, with its instantly iconic chalk giant and a variety of tea shops and inns offering authentic ales and delectable food, is not to be missed.
