The 'square' is the heart of the old village, where low buildings surround a large grass square, with a pub in the corner serving bar meals and hot soups for those walking on wild days.
You'll be spoiled by wildlife when staying in Newton-by-the-Sea. Visit the Newton Pool, a freshwater Nature Reserve just 80 metres from the shore, with its accessible hides it is a good place to observe migrating birds, head to see a breeding colony of terns at Long Nanny Burn in the middle of Beadnell Bay, or look out for sponges and anemones on the soft rock shore on the overhanging rocks, or go rockpooling, finding hermit crabs and porcelain crabs.
In the village, visit Low Newton Square with its cream-washed cottages and an historic pub. Also look out for the unusual St Mary's church, which dates from the end of the 19th century. The church, originally purchased in kit form, is constructed from corrugated steel sheeting and features pretty stained glass windows - It is known locally as the 'Tin Church'.
